Current projects are Water & Sanitation, Food Security, & Disaster Risk Reduction

Medair Afghanistan has been operating since 1996 and currently works in three provinces: Daykundi, Uruzgan, and Kandahar. The country's main office is in Kabul, with multiple field offices. Medair implements WASH, Food Security, Health and Nutrition programming.

Job Description

Overall Purpose

To implement project activities relating to community relations, water need assessment, distributions and conducting wash activities in the field and monitoring.

Project Overview

An Integrated Emergency Response: Medair aims to respond to high levels of food insecurity, malnutrition and morbidity, which have been significantly affected by drought and conflict conditions.  Building upon Medair’s decades of experience in the Central Highlands and Kandahar, Medair’s current projects intend to improve and extend utilization of lifesaving preventive and curative nutrition and health services by mothers, PLWs and children U5; to increase access to clean water, to reduce vulnerability to water-related and other preventable diseases, and to improve and increase food security for the most vulnerable families through food voucher distributions.

This specific project supports three CHCs to provide primary health services, with complementary improvements to their water, sanitation, and waste management facilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities

  • Foster clear communication and good relationships with community leaders through all phases of the project.
  • Ensure the WASH activities are provided in a timely manner to all project sites.
  • Ensure and monitor the quality of the technical work in the field (constructions/repairs of WASH infrastructure) and supervise the contractor in all stages of the construction work.
  • Report to the WASH Supervisor (and Project Manager) on a regular basis on the progress of all activities and field activities and outputs.

 

General responsibilities

  • Immediate notification of any suspicion of fraudulent activity amongst staff and external links.
  • Adherence to Medair values and to contribute to the wellbeing of the team as an active member.
  • Adherence to relevant legal framework of Afghanistan.
  • Adherence to all NRS Regulations and Security Standard Operating Procedures and always maintain confidentiality.

MAIN ACTIVITIES

 

Technical

  • Input to and adhere to comprehensive activity plan (GANTT) for the duration of the project.
  • Organise and monitor construction teams of skilled and unskilled workers according to the plan (timely)
  • Ensure quality of materials and work according to drawings and BOQs
  • Water point construction
    • Technical supervision for well
    • Oversee construction of water points and hydraulic network
  • Latrine construction or repair: Oversee construction of plumbing system, repairing of existing facility and sceptic tank cleaning by contractor.
  • Ensure full beneficiary participation in area of responsibility and ensure a good communication to Health Centre leader on all phases of the WASH project.
  • Ensure accurate and timely input for the reporting of activities to line manager (weekly, monthly, quarterly, final reports) using Medair and Government Templates.
  • Assist in monitoring programme activities and ensures the beneficiary feedback is addressed and recorded
  • Adhere to the security guidelines employed by Medair on site, en-route, and help ensure all security procedures are followed.
 

Job Requirements

PERSON REQUIREMENTS

Educational Background

  • Civil Engineer
  • Additional education in Hydrology, Hydrogeology, plumbing

 

Relevant Experience

  • 3-5 years of experience in the same field/position required (WASH Technician, supervision of water point construction, plumber, conduction of technical WASH assessment, logistic)
  • Experience as a construction foreman in WASH sector with drilling experience
  • Able to follow instructions, and prioritise tasks assigned
  • Experience with an NGO
  • Experience in logistic
  • Experience in WASH activities in Health Centre

 

Language Skills 

  • Fluent in spoken & written Pashto
  • Basic English (English will be tested at interview)
  • Fluent in spoken and written English

 

Computer Skills 

  • Good basic working skills with Microsoft Office
  • Experience using online surveys
  • Competent using excel

 

Motivation
