About FAO Organization

Project Background:

Combating land degradation and biodiversity loss by promoting sustainable rangeland management and biodiversity conservation project is a five year intervention of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) funded through the Global Environment Facility (GEF). This project aims to improve the sustainability of agriculture, forest, and land-use management through rehabilitating degraded rangelands, biodiversity conservation and enhancing and maintaining the livelihoods of Afghan rural communities in Khost, Laghman and Nuristan provinces in          Afghanistan by employing the community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) approach. The project has three major components: (i) capacity-building at the national, sub-national, and district levels in community based natural resources management for sustainable rangeland and forest planning; (ii) Integrated management and restoration of degraded landscapes for biodiversity conservation and sustainable/regenerative rangeland management; (iii) Systematic creation and sharing of knowledge, project coordination, monitoring and evaluation (M&E), and institutional capacity development. 

The Senior GIS specialist will be responsible for all the geospatial data creation and management which would facilitate the implementation of participatory assessment and mapping of natural resources of the target districts. In addition, they will be preparing land-use/land-cover, watershed and topographic maps for RMAs and FMAs and target areas. 

The Senior GIS specialist will closely work with appointed specialists and support the project task team in preparing maps of land-use/land-cover, rangeland hotspots, FMAs and RMAs, mission maps etc which would facilitate in devising strategies and plans for implementation of sustainable natural landscape planning. They will provide technical guidance for the implementation of forest restoration and management, agroforestry and small-scale greenhouses.

FAO is looking for qualified national staff fill the position of senior GIS specialist. This position will support the work of the GEF-funded” Combating land degradation and biodiversity loss by promoting sustainable rangeland management and biodiversity conservation” project in Afghanistan. 

 

Job Description

These are National Project Personnel positions – SB-03.

Reporting Lines

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative, the direct supervision of the Supply Chain / Logistic Specialist, the Warehouse Assistant is responsible for the following tasks:

Technical Focus

The warehouse assistant will assist in the efficient management of warehouse operations, including planning, receiving, storing, dispatching, and verifying commodities. The Warehouse Assistant aims to optimize the quality of warehouse operations, minimize losses, and promote best practices in line with FAO Supply Chain and Logistics department guidelines and standards.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Monitor warehouse conditions and commodities and take appropriate actions to support efficient space utilization and ensure organized storage.
  • Sort and organize office supplies, stationery, IT equipment, and security items in designated locations.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and transporters to schedule and receive incoming shipments on time.
  • Inspect and document the condition of goods upon arrival.
  • Receive and confirm receipt of requested items based on purchase orders or delivery receipts.
  • Resolve any discrepancies or issues with suppliers and transporters related to incoming shipments and update inventory accordingly.
  • Label and categorize goods based on storage requirements.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Release items from stock following the approved Release Order (RO) or request form.
  • Coordinate with requesters, regional offices, suppliers, and transporters to schedule outgoing shipments.
  • Prepare and package products for shipment, ensuring they are securely packed and labelled appropriately.
  • Generate and review outbound documents, such as waybills, and communicate delivery schedules and tracking information to the receiver and other stakeholders.
  • Perform a need assessment of office supplies and stationery for Kabul and regional offices.
  • Plan for office supplies and stationery and initiate budget requests and purchase requisition.
  • Distribute office supplies, stationery, IT equipment, and security equipment based on approved requests.
  • Prepare necessary documents for delivery of stationery, office supplies, and other items.
  • Record fixed assets and release them based on approved request forms in close coordination with the Asset Specialist.
  • Assist Asset Management Specialist in tagging and updating non-expendable assets and manage dispatch and receipt of assets to FAO staff.
  • Support physical verifications of assets and maintain a comprehensive record of expendable assets in local inventory.
  • Responsible for keeping a record of expendable assets in local inventory. 
  • Follow safety protocols and guidelines to ensure the warehouse is a safe working environment.
  • Maintain proper records in soft and hard copies for stock received, stored, and released.
  • Conduct regular audits to verify inventory accuracy and identify any discrepancies.
  • Generate reports on inventory levels, stock movements, and operational issues.
  • Maintain and update stock records manually and electronically.
  • Any other tasks as assigned by the Supervisor / FAO.

Job Requirements

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • University degree (Bachelor) in business administration, management or closely related areas.
  • At least three (3) years of relevant experience in logistic and administrative with an international organization in a logistic or administrative position.
  • Working knowledge of English and local languages (Pashto and/or Dari);
  • National of Afghanistan.

Technical/Functional Skills  

  • Proven ability to perform daily warehouse and inventory management tasks, including proficiency in inventory systems and stock management.
  • Strong proficiency in the entire Microsoft Office suite.
  • Skilled in email and other forms of communication
  • Excellent teamwork skills.
  • Previous experience in managing warehouses containing sensitive items.
