About Cure Hospital – Afghanistan

Background

Cure Hospital is primarily a teaching hospital with services in family medicine, internal medicine, paediatrics, OBGYN, pathology, general surgery, plastic surgery and orthopaedics. The paediatric component of Cure Hospital provides care and consultation services for all children treated at the Hospital or the Family Health Centre as inpatients or outpatients whether routinely or in an emergency situation.

Cure Hospital runs a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). These services need the leadership of an experienced paediatrician.

An important function of the Head of Paediatrics is his/her commitment to training others. The MOPH has recognised a 3-year family medicine residency training program and it is the job of the paediatric department to ensure that by the end of these 3-years, all residents are fully competent in the field of paediatrics.

 Purpose:

The Head of Paediatrics will be responsible for establishing and maintaining good evidence-based, standards of care for patients, both public and private. He/she will be responsible to train and teach the principles of paediatric and neonatal care along with the necesary techniques to doctors training at Cure Hospital and to oversee the practice of paediatrics by these doctors.

The Paediatrician is also responsible for continuing the improvement in quality of care, education and administration of the department. The Paediatrician will ensure that the paediatric staff provide a quality service and follow any National Guidelines that apply to new-born/ paediatric services in Afghanistan.

 

 

Job Description

Nature of Work:

The main responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Paediatric Service Delivery

To oversee and continue to develop all of the patient care as well as the administrative aspects of the paediatric services offered at Curel Hospital. These include out-patient clinics and inpatient services (for neonates and paediatric medical).

 

Together with the residents to be responsible for daily patient care on the wards and in the NICU. This includes seeing all new patients with the residents as soon as possible of their admission (and other patients as needed), discussing the patient’s condition and management, ensuring good recording in the patient’s records and good communication with the patients, patient’s relatives and medical staff.

To see patients in the private clinic as required

To manage patient care within the department with knowledge and skill.

To demonstrate thoroughness and accountability in all dealings with patients and to inspire others through good mentorship and leadership.

2. Education

Teaching of the family medicine residents primarily but also all the doctors in Cure Hospital during relevant conferences

To work together with the family medicine head to ensure that the resident’s receive thorough and balanced training in Paediatrics during their 3 year program

To participate regularly in educational programmes of the medical staff, including morning reports and noon conferences (where relevant) and also to be involved with quality assurance exercises such as morbidity and mortality review, infection prevention etc.

To show commitment to own continued medical education.

To work with the medical director’s and education director to develop audit and research projects.

3. Administration

Co-operate and work together as a team with the medical director and family medicine head in order to improve the paediatric services.

Ensure that current systems and standards in the department are maintained and quality improvement processes developed.

Maintain monthly statistics for the department.

Work together with the education director and the Medical Director’s to develop protocols for the department for improving and enhancing paediatric services.

Continue to co-operate with other hospitals in Kabul and Afghanistan. This will enable Cure Hospital to have friendly transfer agreements with other hospitals for patient referrals.

 

Job Requirements

Special Requirements of the Post:

The Paediatrician must be a Doctor with a degree in Medicine and Pediatric Specialization approved MOPH, MOHE or degree of specialization from out the country.

Completion of Post-graduate Residency Training in Paediatrics and a minimum of 3 years experience post residency.

Previous experience in teaching is preferred.

Ability to supervise and discipline members of the department.

Honesty and professionalism in all dealings with patients, their relatives and other hospital staff.

Ability to admit mistakes, able to take charge and work well in a multi-disciplinary team.

Ability to stay calm in a crisis.

Willingness to learn from visiting paediatricians and provide continuous learning and development to the department.
