Job Description

To contribute to a reduced morbidity and mortality associated with malnutrition, diseases and hazards resulting from deficient (or non-existing) health and nutrition services, environmental health conditions and protection environment in conflict-affected communities in Kandahar and Kabul provinces – Afghanistan.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify the level of severity of sickness, orientated cases in Malnutrition patients to appropriate competence for good management (Midwife, Medical assistant, or Physician): triage.
  • Work closely with any of (Medical Doctor Nutrition, Nutrition Nurse Supervisor or Medical Activity Manager) in the planning and organizing OTP/SFP services at MHT level, in liaison with MAM, PMR and MedCo;
  • Register and report all activities including the supplies distributed, the number of beneficiaries, the SAM and MAM cases, the date and location of services, and report those on weekly and monthly basis.
  • Refer the children and reproductive age women to the vaccinator for relevant vaccination.
  • Register and measure weight, height, Mid Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) of children under 5 years of age at the MHNT site and pregnant and lactating women.
  • Provide treatment for MAM at the MHNT site and refer the SAM cases to the nearby treating centers.
  • Conduct follow up visits on Bi-weekly basis to assess condition of SAM children and provide ration based on the IMAM guideline.
  • Administer Vitamin A if the child has not received Vitamin A supplementation during the previous NID.
  • Promote consumption of iodized salt and healthy diet.
  • Responsible for conducting all other nutrition activities such as Growth monitoring of all U2 year children and screening of children under five and PLWs for acute malnutrition using MUAC or weight\height scale for children in the absence of Nutrition counsellor.
  • Work closely with MHT staff to ensure all aspects of the programme are understood and agreed.
  • Work closely with the team to ensure all children and PLWs are screened correctly.
  • Ensure all nutrition criteria are respected and understood by the team, including admission, discharge and transfer to and from the OTP/SFP;
  • Ensure comprehensive health checks and treatment according to the protocols to nutrition cases detected;
  • In coordination with the medical doctor and Medical Unit, ensure adequate availability of all food supplies in the MHTs;
  • Through liaison with the community volunteers (CHWs and or CoVs) provide effective follow up of all cases: particularly tracing of children who are absent from the programme, sick children, long stay children, children not gaining weight, and children with social problems etc.
  • Ensure proper registration and admission/discharge of OTP patients including ongoing monitoring on patients.
  • Report on progress and any problems in a timely manner
  • Provide health education on RH, nutrition, EPI and about the prevention of other diseases as per the MoPH guidelines.
  • Make sure all the proper training has been received and has the ability to provide trainings (theoretically or on job trainings) to relevant staffs.
  • Respect the target community’s cultures, traditions, and costumes.

Job Requirements

  • Nursing/ Midwifery certificate is required.
  • 2+ years of relevant work experience. Experience in CMAM is an advantage
  • Pashto and Dari skills are required; English is preferable.
  • Work experience in Health as emergency response projects is preferable.
  • Previous experience working for an international NGO is preferable.
  • Commitment to INTERSOS principles.
  • Comply with all relevant INTERSOS policies and procedures.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to effectively present information and respond appropriately to questions from supervisor in the field.
  • Ability and willingness to travel and stay overnight at service delivery point.
