The USAID funded Urban Health Initiative (UHI) Program’s goal is to improve health outcomes of people living in urban areas, particularly focusing on the health of women and children and other vulnerable populations. Interventions aim to increase demand, access and quality of health services. Lead by Jhpiego and implemented by a dynamic consortium of organizations, UHI is implemented in five cities in Afghanistan – Kabul, Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif, Jalalabad and Kandahar.
Position Overview
The midwife-led Maternity Care Center (MLMCC) coordinator will work with the technical, midwifery, and
program team to provide constant support for the quality implementation of MLMCC services based on the
concept in cities. She will facilitate/ coordinate MLMCC activities with advanced-care health facilities and
communities through city management teams. She will play a key role in coordinating to address the MLMCC
challenges/ activities among the UHI, advanced care facility, and MLMCC midwives and management team.
She will work closely with the city team and MLMCC Associate Manager to improve the quality of MLMCC
work and implement the MLMCC Standards/ criteria.

Main Responsibilities:
Ensure smooth implementation of MLMCC activities based on the concept and MLMCC guidelines in
a daily base
• Regularly monitor the quality implementation of the MLMCC activities
• Support the MLMCC midwives in data recording, tracking, kipping, and monthly reporting to the UHI
project
• Provide regular monthly, quarterly, and annual reports of MLMCC.
• Prepare program documentation and share lessons learned periodically and based on need
• Facilitation of meetings, trainings, workshops, and other events related to MLMCC.
• Provide technical support to the head midwife and supervisor in the preparation of midwives’
working roster, shifting, and conducting the MLMCC QI committee and MLMCC standards.
• Coordinate MLMCC management activities, resources, equipment, and information
• Monitor MLMCC indicator progress and work with MLMCC and program team to address challenges
and barriers
• Ensure MLMCC standards and requirements are met in the quality assurance criteria
• Follow with JHPIEGO/UHI project operational, security, and other guidelines and policies.
• Participate in UHI monthly and quarterly meetings
• Accomplish any other tasks assigned by the supervisor
Abilities/Skills:
• A certified midwife–related higher education degree is an advantage.
• At least 5 years of experience in maternal, new-born health, and Family planning program activities
• Ability to work successfully in teams, in a complex environment with multiple tasks, short deadlines,
and intense pressure to perform
• Strong skills in facilitation, capacity building, and coordination
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including strong writing, analytical, and
communication skills in Dari, Pashtu, and English (preferable)
• Experience working with Microsoft Office software applications (Excel, Word, Outlook Explorer,
PowerPoint) is advantageous
