Job Description

Provide obstetrical care to pregnant women and their babies, doing follow up before, during and after delivery, according to INTERSOS obstetrical and reproductive health protocols, universal hygienic and newborn caring standards and under supervision of a specialist doctor, in order to ensure their health conditions and avoid post-delivery complications.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Follow INTERSOS guidelines and protocols in management for all SRH activities.
  • Provide a continuous and correct antenatal care for pregnant women, by taking the full history of the patients. 
  • Clear and correct handover for patients and special cases, between shift in the maternity to ensure the continuity of management.
  • Work and collaborate with the supervisor to monitor the patient flow to organize well the maternity and SRH.
  • prompt decision and accurate management for emergencies and complicated obstetric cases in collaboration with supervisor, and the obstetrician.
  • Ensure the application of IPC rules including standard precautions, wastes segregation, patients hygiene, and ward cleanliness.
  • Provide appropriate follow up for the post-partum patients and their babies in the maternity and ensure that they are advised well for the importance for PNC visits (at least 2 visits), hygiene, baby care ,exclusive breast-feeding, and family planning when they are discharged.
  • Provide, a good quality of care for the patients, and their babies (baby examination), in the PNC visits and ensure that the family planning methods are well explained to the mothers, and the babies received the appropriate vaccines.
  • Identify SGBV cases and provide appropriate management.
  • Prompt and accurate documentation of care in all patient files and registers.
  • Identify patients at risk and need mental health management like miscarriages, IUFD, PP psychosis
  • Offer support and advice following events such as miscarriage, termination, stillbirth, neonatal abnormality and neonatal death
  • Carrying out daily inventory for the availability for drugs, and check for the availability of all instruments needed for work in the maternity and SRH to ensure a high quality of care.
  • Promptly reporting protection and any other incidences to the supervisor or the manager.
  • Responsible for Care of biomed items.
  • Ensure the implementation and continuity of antenatal and postnatal care, family planning, obstetrical care (BEmONC), neonatal and comprehensive abortion care, management of victims of sexual violence, reproductive tract infections and Fistula care in accordance with INTERSOS Reproductive Core Package of Activities and reinforce the implementation of standardized protocols.
  • Collaborate with the medical doctor and/or nurse in the management of Sexual Violence cases
  • Assess the feasibility for referral of pregnant women form the TBAs to the OPD/BEmONC for medical evaluation and/or complicated deliveries.
  • Ensure hygiene and sterilization criteria (including universal precautions) are met according to INTERSOS specifications. 
  • Properly follow up all newborn babies from delivery until discharge, informing mothers and relatives about importance of breast feeding, vaccination and possible complications resulting from harmful traditional practices.
  • Ensure patients’ right to privacy and confidentiality is respected.
  • Ensure administrative procedures of admissions.
  • verify patients are properly informed and receive the documents required (birth certificate, vaccination card, etc)
  • Participate in the organization of the ward in collaboration with other midwifes and the maternity ward supervisor. Ensure transfer of relevant information to the next shift team (specially identifying risk cases)
  • According to INTERSOS protocols in force, conduct normal deliveries independently Manage obstetric emergencies; identify cases needing referral and send them in time, clean up the newborn, executing and registering first neo-natal medical acts (cutting and cleaning the umbilical cord, vaccination, etc.), detecting possible anomalies/infections of the newborn and reporting them to the doctor.
  • To ensure successful interventions Supervises the use of drugs, facilities and obstetric material, to ensure, in accordance with number of patients and prescriptions, a rational use as well as pharmacy stock levels are permanently updated, kept under appropriate conditions and above minimum safety point. 
  • Liaise with agencies and other health and social care professionals to ensure continuity of care
  • Actively participate in training and supervision of junior colleagues
  • Follow the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient
  • Has a general understanding of the association, its functioning, structure and values (charter).
  • Is aware of INTERSOS objectives and activities in general and the working context.
  • Participates actively in meetings and trainings
  • Is always aware of security rules and situation in the field.
  • Is aware of activities of other departments and respect specific rules and procedures.
  • Is aware of social and political situation and keeps information up to date.
  • Passes on all relevant information related to INTERSOS scope of action and context.
  • Advises on various topics (culture, economy, politics, etc.).
  • Translates documents and/or interprets conversation when necessary.

 

Note: Sexual and Reproductive health activitie SRH Activities include: antenatal and postnatal care, family planning, obstetrical care (BEmONC), neonatal and comprehensive abortion care, management of victims of sexual violence, female genital mutilation, reproductive tract infections and Fistula care. Note: 2. BEmONC = basic emergency obstetric and neonatal care = Administration of antibiotics, oxytocics, anticonvulsants, manual removal of the placenta, removal of retained products following abortion, assisted vaginal delivery, preferably with vacuum extractor and newborn care including neonatal resuscitation.

Job Requirements

  • High diploma on midwifery studies from a recognized school is required
  • Training and experience in SRH
  • At least two years of relevant work experience as midwife, working experience with INGOs is an asset
  • Pashto and Dari speaking and writing skills are required, English is preferable
  • Diplomacy, good communication and interpersonal skills,
  • Multi-cultural flexibility, Team Player, open-minded
  • Calm, stress management, patient, ability to listen

  • Flexible if asked to participate in activities outside your job description
