Job Description

As a Mental Health Specialist for our Women's Health Center located within the female prison facility, you will provide specialized mental health assessment, intervention, and support services to incarcerated women with mental health needs. Your expertise in mental health care and commitment to patient-centered care will contribute to promoting psychological well-being and rehabilitation among inmates within the correctional setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Mental Health Assessment and Evaluation:
  • Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments and evaluations for incarcerated women, including psychosocial assessments, diagnostic interviews, and assessment of mental health symptoms and functioning.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to gather relevant information and develop individualized treatment plans based on assessment findings and clinical observations.
  1. Crisis Intervention and Management:
  • Provide crisis intervention and management services to inmates experiencing acute psychiatric crises, suicidal ideation, self-harm behaviors, or other emergent mental health concerns.
  • Assess risk factors, develop safety plans, and coordinate with appropriate personnel to ensure timely and effective response to mental health emergencies.
  1. Individual and Group Therapy:
  • Facilitate individual therapy sessions for incarcerated women with mental health diagnoses, utilizing evidence-based therapeutic modalities and interventions to address symptoms, coping skills, and psychosocial functioning.
  • Lead psychoeducational and therapeutic group sessions on topics such as stress management, emotion regulation, coping skills, and relapse prevention to support mental health recovery and rehabilitation.
  1. Medication Management:
  • Collaborate with psychiatrists, primary care providers, and nursing staff to conduct medication evaluations, monitor medication adherence, and adjust psychotropic medications as needed to optimize treatment outcomes and minimize side effects.
  • Educate patients and staff about psychotropic medications, including indications, benefits, risks, and potential adverse effects.
  1. Rehabilitation and Reintegration Support:
  • Develop and implement rehabilitation and reintegration plans for incarcerated women with mental health needs, addressing barriers to successful reintegration into the community upon release from prison.

Provide counseling, support, and referrals to community resources and services to facilitate continuity of care and promote successful transitions to community-based mental health services.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in clinical psychology, counseling psychology, social work, psychiatric nursing, or a related mental health field required; licensure or certification as a mental health professional required.
  • Minimum of three years of clinical experience working in mental health settings, with a focus on providing mental health services to individuals with complex needs, including those involved in the criminal justice system.
  • Strong clinical skills and proficiency in conducting mental health assessments, diagnostic evaluations, and evidence- based psychotherapy interventions.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and crisis intervention skills, with the ability to establish rapport and trust with diverse individuals in a correctional healthcare setting.

Working Conditions:

  • This position will be based within the women's health center located within the prison facility.

Work hours may vary, including regular hours and on-call responsibilities to respond to emergent mental health needs of incarcerated women
