Medair Afghanistan has been operating since 1996 and currently works in three provinces: Daykundi, Uruzgan, and Kandahar. The country's main office is in Kabul, with multiple field offices. Medair implements WASH, Food Security, Health and Nutrition programming.

Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assessment and prescribe psychotherapeutic medication and review
  • Provide psychoeducation and get release of information to speak with family
  • Review goals for treatment and Daily mood through use of MSE for illness self-management
  • Discuss importance of adjunctive therapy in improving self-management, functional recovery and adherence to treatment
  • Interview client and conduct a full bio-psycho-social assessment
  • Train Medair staff in PFA and supportive communication and support the team in developing care group materials around basic mental health and psychosocial support
  • Create awareness amongst the health and nutrition team on MHPSS and the importance of self-care
  • Perform any other duties not listed in the JD but requested by line manager

MAIN ACTIVITIES

Supervisory responsibilities:

  • Support PSS staff with referral and follow up of cases requiring referral to Mental Health PHC consultation or specialised care
  • Conduct clinical supportive supervision and on the Job training to mobile team and community staff

Quality management:

  • Promote and use the Medair operating procedures, ensuring that all standardised formats are used and guidelines are followed
  • Ensure PSS activities are implemented in line with donor proposals and requirements and in accordance with Medair, donor, country and international standards i.e. Sphere, CHS and IASC guidelines
  • Ensure accurate record keeping of all activities at the mobile health site or in the communities
  • Submit required daily, weekly, and monthly reports. Carry out required quality checks according to provided checklists
  • Assist with the translation of documents from English to Pashto / Pashto to English as required, especially medical or technical terms

External representation:

  • Liaise with stakeholders providing health in the same location, esp. for referral
  • In collaboration with the Health Manager and other MHNTs operating in the same district ensure staff of referral facilities are informed of all aspects of the program including referral pathways
  • Provide feedback to the Health Manager, Health & Nutrition Project Manager on community specific challenges and barriers

Job Requirements

PERSON REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • Graduate from recognized medical faculty with mental health training.
  • Should have passed the Exit Examination
  • Specialization in the relevant field
  • Degree in Psychology
  • Trained in PFA and communication skills.
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Certified trainer for PFA, mhGAP-HIG and communication skills
  • Knowledge of IASC and Sphere guidelines for MHPSS

Relevant experience

  • Minimum 5 years’ relevant post graduate experience
  • Specialization in the relevant field is an advantage
  • Experience implementing mental health/ psychosocial/ protection projects or activities.

Languages

  • Pashto oral and written skills
  • Good command of English
  • Good English oral and written skills

Computer

  • Strong MS Excel, MS Word and ODK
  • Proficiency data analysis and reporting
  • Familiar with DoPH and HMIS reporting

Organizational capacity

  • Ability to organize a mobile site efficiently and orderly, coordinating team members and beneficiaries, identifying bottlenecks, and providing solutions.
  • Ability to work with community leaders to arrange clinic sites, access, and security.

Team building

  • Willingness to support others and to share workload.
  • Good training and coaching skills
  • Aptitude for community mobilization and capacity-building

  • Ability to work under pressure and manage personal stress levels
