About Jhpiego

The USAID funded Urban Health Initiative (UHI) Program’s goal is to improve health outcomes of people living in urban areas, particularly focusing on the health of women and children and other vulnerable populations. Interventions aim to increase demand, access and quality of health services. Lead by Jhpiego and implemented by a dynamic consortium of organizations, UHI is implemented in five cities in Afghanistan – Kabul, Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif, Jalalabad and Kandahar.

Job Description

Responsibilities
 Lead the execution of a gender analysis to identify barriers to the uptake of Reproductive M aternal
N ew born and Child H ealth (RM N CH ) services.
 W ork to ensure adherence to Jhpiego’s gender service delivery standards and principles across the
project.
 W ork w ith team s to develop and operationalize gender transform ative approaches to foster
changes in household decision-m aking processes, couples’ com m unication, com m unity social
norm s, and positive health-seeking behaviors.
 Adapt training for health providers on issues such as respectful care, health service delivery, and
other elem ents of w ork.
 W ork w ith team s to strengthen gender com ponents of training and job aids for and by com m unity
health w orkers.
 Conduct training for health w orkers (both facility and com m unity-based), and governm ent and civil
society partners to build capacity on respectful m aternity care, gender-sensitive health service
delivery, gender-based violence, and engaging m en in health.
 W ork closely w ith the com m unication team to develop/adapt and roll out strategies and m essages
that address social and cultural health-related beliefs, including social and gender norm s.
 W ork closely w ith field im plem entation team s across cities to ensure consistency of quality in roll
out and operationalization of gender integration and gender transform ative approaches in the
project.
 M entor and w ork w ith project staff and local partners to integrate gender strategies into their w ork
supporting RM N CH interventions.
 Docum ent processes and outcom es for integrating gender into RM N CH interventions along w ith
other high im pact interventions related to tuberculosis and nutrition.
 W ork w ith the m onitoring and evaluation team to analyze and report on indicators m easuring the
outcom es and im pact of the above interventions.
 Assist w ith w riting technical papers and donor reports on the above w ork.
 Liaise w ith the governm ent and partners to ensure above activities are coordinated w ith other
efforts to address gender in the context of health program m ing as and w here needed.

 Present and share lessons, best practices, and successes related to ensuring gender equity in high
im pact interventions to institutionalize practices for scale-up.

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Requirements:
 Master’s degree in Public H ealth, Social Sciences, or Developm ent Studies or dem onstrated
equivalent through experience.
 Minimum of 3 years senior-level experience providing technical advice on gender equality in
programming
 M inim um 5 years of program experience in public health and/or international developm ent,
preferably prom oting gender equality.
 Strong analytical skills, especially for conducting gender analyses.
 Strong technical capacity and practical experience in designing and im plem enting gender-sensitive
developm ent program s.
 A good know ledge of gender and global developm ent issues, preferably w ith an understanding of
U SAID’s approach to gender equality.
 Proven experience in developing, im plem enting, m onitoring, and evaluating advocacy and
program s.
 Fam iliarity w ith different m onitoring and evaluation approaches.
 Excellent group facilitation, m ulti-stakeholder consultation, and strategic planning skills.
 Know ledge of participatory approaches to developm ent.
 Excellent in capacity-building, and training skills.
 Know ledge of policy advocacy processes.
 Experience w orking w ith civil society organizations, governm ents, donors, and international
organizations.
 Results-oriented and strong decision-m aking skills
 U nderstanding of perform ance im provem ent and training techniques
 Excellent verbal, w ritten, and presentation skills
 Ability to w ork in a com plex environm ent w ith m ultiple tasks, short deadlines, and intense pressure
to perform
 Ability to travel to provinces
 Fluency in English language
