Job Description

General Duties

The Driver under the supervision of Fleet Assistant is responsible to carry out the duties in accordance with the Driver Transport Policy & Procedures and Specific Duties as outlined below. Given the unstable security situation throughout Afghanistan as well as concerns with dangers to foreigners walking unprotected in the streets or being victimized while using public transportation it has been deemed necessary for all IRC.

Specific Duties:

  • The safe and efficient transportation of IRC personnel and materials
  • The care and maintenance of IRC vehicles and their accessories
  • The representation of IRC in a professional manner

 

Key Working Relationships:

 

  • Thorough knowledge of road rules and regulations
  • Good knowledge of the operation and components of any type of vehicle
  • Safe driving skills
  • Skills in routine vehicle maintenance
  • Knowledge (or ability to quickly learn) of HF, VHF and satellite communications equipment
  • Team spirit and problem solving abilities
  • Able to carry out limited, un-supervised tasks
  • Able to work at night shift/weekend
  • Drivers must display an attitude and behaviour that reflects well on both them and the IRC

 

Expected Deliverables:

 

  • Strict adherence to the IRC’s vehicle policies and procedures, including the use of seatbelts by all passengers.
  • Daily and pre-long distance vehicle checks.
  • Accurate upkeep of the vehicle’s log sheet.
  • Maintaining the vehicle clean, fuelled and mechanically sound.
  • Inspecting and maintaining all vehicle accessories.
  • Advising the Fleet Assistant of pending inspections, insurance renewal or any defects or problems.
 

Job Requirements

  • Education: Completion of high school or equivalent desirable
  • Years of Experience: Five years’ work experience as a driver with a safe driving record from an international organization
  • Skills:
  • Current valid Afghanistan driving license
  • Basic technical knowledge of vehicle and generator operations
  • Spoken and written English skills considered desirable; local language skills (Dari and Pashto) essential
  • Able to operate a computer with some proficiency in Microsoft Word packages (or willingness to learn)
  • Knowledge of city and inter-provincial roads and transport routes
  • Drivers training highly desirable.
  • Certificate in AV/B6 an asset.
  • Able to pass IRC driving test.

 

  • Technical Competency:
  • To carry out daily vehicle inspections to ensure full functioning of all systems the vehicle.
  • To identify major defects and maintenance in his vehicle and report to his supervisor.
  • To ensure sufficient fuel is available in the vehicle tank and required spare parts are also available and vehicles lubricants, oil are not expired.
  • Communication and reporting skills
  • Fluency in Pashto, Dari, and English
  • Computer skills (including MS Word, Excel, Access, and internet) an advantage
  • Ability to work closely, professionally, and constructively with all others regardless of nationality, ethnicity, gender, religion, race, tribe, or cultural background
